Castles reinvented
Up the slope awaits the Castillo de la Mata , the fortress that protected the city from corsair attacks in the 16th century and which has been transformed into an interpretation center for Palmense bastions. But it is not the only fortification resurrected. Next to the port is the Castillo de la Luz , the first defense that Las Palmas de Gran Canaria had, whose walls withstood the skirmishes of Sir Francis Drake and Peter van der Hoes; now it houses the works of the contemporary sculptor Martín Chirino. This communion between past and present makes the visit a succession of stimuli and unexpected nooks and crannies. And, although the sea can be seen from its battlements, it is better to cross the Guanarteme Isthmus to greet the Atlantic.
